How dare you call at dinnertime!
Hangry Swing Voters Connect the Dots because,
Swing Lefties call Pennsylvanians at dinnertime.
I was shocked when I saw that Swing Left Alliance calls voters from 6pm to 8pm.
Does anyone take the phone off the hook any more? Half of the folks we call don’t pick up. I wonder if that is the cell phone equivalent of taking the phone off of the hook…leaving your cell phone in your pocketbook and ignoring the distant ding while scooping soup.
This is a blessing; the folks that don’t want to talk don’t pick up.
The ones that do, do. Even while dishing dinner.
“I can’t talk right now. I’m trying to get dinner on the table….but you can call back another time.”
She wants to talk, but her sauce is setting. She was very kind, she has opinions that she needs someone to hear. Sign up with Swing Blue Alliance for the next PA-7 phonebank and you might get this friendly person on the line.
“I have to finish dinner. What do you need to know?”
She was the voter that said the price of beef was what needed to change direction in this country. Sign up for the next PA-7 phonebank (… and I click the “I speak Spanish box”) you might get her longer opinions on the Democratic party’s relationship to the Latino vote. She wanted to elaborate but the kids and the kids of the kids were waiting forks-in-hand.
“I really don’t want to talk about this right now.”
Was that hanger making his tone rushed? Even if that one felt a little bad … remember, I was trained not to call people at dinnertime … I knew that even the suggestion that he should consider the direction the country was going … while he was hungry and trying to eat … would make him think about the price of food.
Swing Left is helping me turn my Massachusetts anger into Swing State hanger.
How to help folks connect the dots between the price of eggs, their pre-meal short tempers and our current political ruling class? Ask people, “If you have a little time, I would love to hear how you feel about the direction the country is going.” This is the phonebanking equivalent of the New York Times reporter stalking Trump voters in the grocery store parking lot.

This is PA, not MA… this man is used to getting more for his $106 at the grocery store… he didn’t wander into a Whole Foods with three hungry children and walk out with a single bag for $106… that’s an MA story, not a PA one.
We all know how great it feels to put a ton of groceries in the car…and how that contrasts with a scant 4 bags for the same amount of money. That buyer’s regret feeling is as strong as hanger-pangs. This reporter’s follow-up to “who did you vote for in 2024?” – “How are you feeling about that … are you feeling good … ?” might be a little leading…but it still allows him to put feelings to words…and attach those feelings to the name Trump, and/or the Trump-aligned wider Republican party.
“If the people are happy, I am happy. If the people are upset, I am, too.”
She was my first pick-up and by far the longest and friendliest conversation. More kids in the background, and no reassurances at the end of the call. She was not willing to put any numbers on how likely she was to vote for a Democrat. She needs Democrats to “Stand up for the people more. Be stronger.” hmmm …she didn’t sound hangry…nor did the kids playing nearby…okay. So, well-fed voters won’t gripe about the prices, but they will give real feedback about where they need the Democratic party to go.
Every call you make helps the Democratic candidate craft a platform and campaign that suits these very specific voters. This is our 100% ethical edge. We talk to everyone. Please join Swing Left for our next PA-7 phonebank. PA needs all of us in MA to make that happen.
My mother-in-law is the only person that picks up at dinnertime only to yell…
“How dare you call at dinnertime!”
So, don’t worry. You will keep your current hearing level intact during this activity. Bonus: Hangry her lives in NYC; nary a swing district in all of the boroughs. She needs no help channeling her hanger, anger and all animosity toward Trump.
